Featured in HelloGiggles, COVID19 + Eating Disorder Triggers
On March 19, California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered a lockdown for the entire state of California. It was the beginning of the new world we have come to reside in and have been learning to navigate for the past eight weeks. In this time we have gone through phases of hoarding toilet paper and hand sanitizer to a baking craze filling social media feeds with fresh loaves of bread and endless amounts of banana bread. With this, there has developed a joke around the “quarantine 15.” Let me get one thing straight. YOUR BODY SIZE AND WEIGHT DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR WORTH. It is estimated that 20-million women and 10-million men (and there are no numbers for gender-expansive, non-binary, or gender non-confirming individuals) in the USA will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. The “quarantine 15” is not a joke. It strikes fear and anxiety in many of those currently experiencing an eating disorder, those in recovery, and those who live with disordered eating. With that said, I am grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness and support Hello Giggles in providing a resource with tips and tools for coping with an eating disorder during this time.
